Review:
You may already have had a sneak preview of ‘The 20/20 Experience’. Two singles from the music album were released on the 14th of January (Suit &Tie) and the 11th of February (Mirrors). This is the 3rd studio album by the man of all talents, the recording artist that is Justin Timberlake courtesy of the RCA Records. The full-length work hit the streets on the 15th of March. This is a welcome return for someone who seems to have gone on a musical hiatus during which he managed to get married and do a whole load of movies. Following his hiatus, Timberlake chose RCA and this album is the result of that fruitful collaboration. We understand that recording took place between June 2012 and the beginning of 2013. In a typical show of resilience, Timberlake was busy promoting his films.

Justin Timberlake: The 20/20 Experience Album Highlights

This is not an artist that is happy to leave the hefty lifting to others. Therefore the producers include the artist himself, Timbaland, Rob Knox and Jerome Harmon (J-Roc). The lead single is ‘Suit & Tie’. It got its release on the 14th of January with a great entrance. The single managed to reach the top five in different countries and was actually number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. His second single ‘Mirrors’ even reached the top of the charts in the UK, a mark of the enduring appeal that the artist has regardless of his hiatus. It is almost shocking to think that this was once a callow teenager, madly in love with Britney Spears and regaling us with some cheesy pop tunes as part of a boy band. When interviewed about the album, Timberlake admits that he takes a very long time before he releases his work because he is obsessed with perfection.

The last time he did something really significant in musical terms was in 2006 when he released his second studio album titled ‘Future Sex/LoveSounds’. The critics heaped him with superlatives and he achieved top hits with ‘My Love’; ‘SexyBack’ and ‘What Goes Around’. In 2007 he wrapped up a worldwide tour in support of the album and then promptly took a break from his musical career. That gave him room to establish his reputation as a formidable actor and producer. His record label Tennman Records also gave him an opportunity to work behind the scenes. Buying a stake in MySpace showed that this was a man who was also trying his hand at entrepreneurship.

By his own; admission there is not a lot of editing in this album. Apparently Timberlake takes inspiration from musical legends like Queen who were capable of doing 10-minute songs. We got a glimpse of what was in store when he performed at the Super Bowl Weekend. ‘That Girl’ and ‘Pusher Love Girl’ seemed ultra modern with that unmistakable vibe that has developed in his post-teenage career. The track listing for this album is as follows:
1. “Pusher Love Girl”
2. “Suit & Tie”
3. “Don’t Hold the Wall”
4. “Strawberry Bubblegum”
5. “Tunnel Vision”
6. “Spaceship Coupe”
7. “That Girl”
8. “Let the Groove Get In”
9. “Mirrors”
10. “Blue Ocean Floor”
Deluxe edition bonus tracks:
11. “Dress On”
12. “Body Count”

Verdict:
Although ‘The 20/20 Experience’ is not going to be a classic, there is enough there to suggest that the hiatus was not in vain. We would certainly recommend that you own a copy.
