The smartphone sector has been at the forefront of bringing new innovations and the Sony Xperia Z is no different. Revealed at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, this smartphone has been taken up by distributors such as Expansys (UK). The pre-order price was in the region of $600, a slight increase on the original price following rumors of the smartphone release. However it is almost certain that the US providers will be happy to half that price if the consumer accepts a 2-year contract. Nevertheless the smartphone’s specifications are still interesting even for those consumers who are getting rather saturated with the constant launch of new products. Currently it is only available in black and white but we wonder whether there will be other options in the future.

Sony Xperia Z Features

This SIM-free phone packs 16GB worth of capacity. It a 5-inch display with all the full HD Reality features. The smartphone is dust and water resistant, a practical bonus for travelers. Although the publicity claims a water resistance of half an hour up to a depth of 1 meter, we are yet to test that claim. However it must be said that the Sony Xperia Z has a Retina Display that is higher than that of the famous Apple iPhone 5. It is not often that you get 443 ppi on any smartphone.

Sony has opted for the trusted Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. However it has been stated that they will upgrade it to the Android 4.2 following the launch. Therefore it might be worth the effort to look out for this extra feature. The rear of the smartphone is graced with a 13 megapixel camera which boasts Exmor RS for mobile. Apparently this is the world’s first image sensor that also has HDR videos on a smartphone. A secondary 2.2 megapixel camera has been added. It must be noted that both cameras are capable of producing 1080p video.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, the Sony Xperia Z features core running clock speeds of 1.5GHz. There is a great Andreno 320 graphics unit. You get 2GB worth of RAM as well as 4G LTE network connectivity. This smartphone is NFC-enabled. Apart from the obvious expectations of a run-of-the-mill smartphone, this product promises fast delivery and great images. The only problem is that at the end of the day, it is a phone. You can play about with it but the most important aspect is its ability to make and receive phone calls. Is that worth the price? We will have to wait and see the sales figures.

It is all too easy to get cynical about smartphones in general. They have moved away from the concept of a functional mobile phone into that of a mini computer. The success rate for the manufacturers is high but there are signs that the sector may be waning. The Sony Xperia Z is at the top of the range. If you can afford it, there are plenty of features that await your verdict.
